OUR PLAN

We are aiming to send 20 boxes of books over to Senegal -- the cost to ship is 50 dollars a box, estimating to approximately $ 1,000 dollars. We have raised $500 through other fundraisers and donations, but as we are approaching the final weeks of the semester we are a bit rushed to collect the final amount. All of the money donated will be used to take the books to New Jersey, from where they will be shipped over to Senegal.

The Semester is coming to an end on April 30th, but we know that with our drive & help from our friends, we can make this happen.

WHAT'S THE ISSUE?

In this class we've read books pertaining to the history and traditions of Africa. Books like Things Fall Apart, Xala, Monique and the Mango Rains and many others. These are to Africa as Gatsby is to America -- and, as we've been informed -- students in the University of Dakar cannot afford or access these novels. The English department at this University holds 6,000 students -- classes having up to nearly 1,500 students -- and if they're lucky, they have only one copy of whatever book they are reading. Clearly, this is an issue --- and what we are trying to help.

WHO WE ARE

English 3140 -- African Literature at Western Michigan University, instructed by Allen Webb, is a class of 26 students who are looking to change the lives of 6,000 students at the University of Dakar located in Senegal. African Lit is an informative class that has taught all of us many things about traditional and modern Africa, along with its people. We've learned their horrors and difficulties -- but some issues cannot be found inside of the books we're reading.

WHY?

As an English class, full of mostly English majors, we feel a deep solidarity with the students over at the University of Sengal and we want to help them as much as we possibly can. Not being able to access the books that you are required to read for your class is a shame -- and we are ready to help eliminate this issue.

Nokko Bokk -- the name of this project means 'we share'. We share our passion for English, our drive for education, and our love for literature -- and we want to share the opprotunity to access these books with the University of Senegal -- and we hope that you are willing to help us share, as well.
